Troy Hetherington

Facilitator

Growing up in a place like Byron Bay was something Troy considers an absolute privilege. However, despite being surrounded by incredible beaches and rainforests, his life at home and school was far from idyllic.

At home, life was overshadowed by themes of family addiction and financial hardship. School was characterized by both subtle and not-so-subtle forms of intimidation and abuse. He learned very early on how to read a room and quickly judge people’s moods.

Underneath it all, Troy longed for acceptance but feared social exclusion. He became a chameleon, adapting to fit in but never feeling he truly belonged. Toward the end of high school, he and his friends started losing mates. Although they expressed care, they never spoke about their struggles - society had taught them not to. After too many funerals, Troy knew it was time to challenge the stereotypes of what it means to be a "real man."

Troy has lived many lives in his short time on this earth, working across various industries including trade (carpentry, landscaping, bush regeneration), brewing, warehousing and logistics, sales, retail, hospitality, and security. Alongside his diverse career, he has traveled the world and pursued studies in psychotherapy and counselling. If he has learned anything along the way, it’s that everyone is waiting for permission to take off their mask and show their real self. He feels incredibly lucky that his role in Tomorrow Man allows him to create spaces where men can drop the act and be real, both within the organisation and through the men’s groups he facilitates outside of it.

When he's not working, Troy can be found scouring Melbourne’s many record stores—always on the hunt for new additions to his collection. Or, he’s out with his partner, walking their fur child through one of the city’s gardens or national parks. A sucker for a good pub trivia night and a lover of live music, he is also a shamelessly proud nerd. Whether it’s music, philosophy, history, books, movies, or psychology, he loves experiencing and learning.
